先日、シェイクスピア(1564-1616)のソネット(14行の押韻構成詩)をモチーフにした拙作『ソネット12・violet』を倉庫で見つけました。書籍の中で花探しをする旅の作品シリーズで、この作品は2011年3月8日から29日の個展にあわせて制作しました。花の白黒シリーズが中心だった展示の隅にこの作品（見せ方が少し違いますが）を展示していたことを思い出しました。会期中に東日本大地震があり私自身に大きな被害はありませんでしたが、何となく保留してしまったことがあるように思います。
この詩の中に「violet(スミレ)」が出てきます。スミレが盛りを過ぎて枯れていくさまを「時」の無常さとして、そしてこの詩の全体も、抗えぬ「時」を詠んでいます。また、『ハムレット』(1601年頃)ではハムレット殿下の愛情が一時の気まぐれでせっかちに咲いてすぐに萎える束の間のものであり、芳香で美しく儚いスミレのようだというように表現しています。
チューリップの原種がトルコからヨーロッパに持ち込まれたのもシェイクスピアが生きたこの時期です。世界一周航海などで様々な地域から草花が持ち込まれ、それまでの薬草としての植物から楽しむ園芸へと発展しました。草花や果実はシェイクスピア作品の印象的な小道具として表現されています。
今回の展示『ソネットのスミレ』は、再会したソネット12を起点とし、2011年とは景色の違う自分と、変わりゆく世界を確かめるように「時」を見つめ直してみたいと思います。
